Seven dead, 20 hurt in 5th China school attack

BEIJING, May 12, 2010 (AFP) - Seven children were hacked to death and at least 20 others were wounded in an attack at a kindergarten in northern China on Wednesday, state media reported, citing local officials.

The attack was the fifth violent assault on school children in less than two months, and comes despite a push to boost security in and around schools across the country.

The Xinhua news agency said the attack took place in the city of Hanzhong in Shaanxi province, and that the injured had been taken to hospital for treatment. No other details were immediately available.

Several similar attacks on young children late last month shocked the nation, and raised fears about possible copycat assailants.

In the eastern province of Shandong, a farmer attacked children with a hammer, injuring five, before fatally setting himself on fire on April 30.

The day before, a disgruntled jobless man injured 29 children and three adults with a knife used to slaughter pigs in an attack at a kindergarten in the eastern city of Taixing, in neighbouring Jiangsu province.

Earlier that same week, a 33-year-old teacher on sick leave due to mental problems injured 15 students and a teacher in a knife attack at a primary school in southern China's Guangdong province.

And in March, a former doctor enraged by a split with his girlfriend stabbed eight children to death and injured five others in Fujian province. He was executed last month.

Authorities across China have already begun implementing measures to strengthen security at schools, increasing police patrols near school grounds, and boosting the monitoring of people known to be mentally ill.

USA: 'Obama, you're a hottie!'

CHEEKTOWAGA (New York) - A GUSHING admirer left Barack Obama red-faced and at a loss for words Thursday, telling the president during a surprise stop at a New York restaurant that he was a 'hottie'.

Luann Haley, 45, offered her effusive assessment during the president's impromptu visit to Duff's Famous Wings, a New York eatery known for its take on Buffalo wings, a favorite regional dish.

Mr Obama was in the hard-hit industrial city of Buffalo to deliver a speech on the economy, which he says now is on the rebound following the recession. The president's convoy pulled up to the restaurant for a surprise lunchtime visit much to the delight of its patrons - especially Ms Haley, for whom Mr Obama apparently was the most delectable dish in the joint.

'You're a hottie with a smokin' little body,' she gushed, a compliment that appeared to leave the president speechless. When Mr Obama gave her a little hug she became even more ecstatic.

'He gave me a squeeze!' Ms Haley squealed. And with a glance at television cameras capturing the encounter, Haley delivered a little jibe for First Lady Michelle Obama, who did not accompany the president on his New York trip.

'Hi Michelle,' she said. 'Eat your heart out!'

Baby suffocates to death while in bed with parents

One parent woke up to find baby not breathing

A ONE-month-old baby girl suffocated while sleeping on the same bed as her parents, reported both Sin Chew Daily and China Press.

The parents, who are Filipinos, had slept with the baby at their home in Singapore after feeding her at about 1am.

It was reported that one of the parents woke up at about 4am and was shocked to find that the baby was not breathing and had turned purple.

The baby was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The dailies reported that police are still investigating whether she was suffocated by the pillows, blanket or her parents.

Man offered baby for beer

CHICOPEE (Massachusetts) - AUTHORITIES say a Massachusetts man offered to give his 3-month-old daughter to a maintenance man outside a gas station convenience store in exchange for a pair of beers.

Chicopee police say 24-year-old Matthew Brace of Northampton made the offer to swap the child for two 40 ounce (1 litre) bottles of beer on Monday.

The maintenance man called police, who found Brace hiding with the girl behind a trash container.

State child welfare officials took the baby into custody.

Police say Brace was not arrested but will be summoned to court to face a charge of reckless endangerment of a child. A phone number for him could not immediately be found.

The child's mother was in the store at the time buying cigarettes. She has not been charged. -- AP
